Educational activities are a struggle. I can tolerate screen time if she is learning something useful. So imagine my shock when her Diary of a Wimpy Kid books arrived from Gammy's Ebay order. We waited a day to let the COVID 19 cooties rest and dug into her random collection of Wimpy Kid books. It was about 1PM when C settled on her first book to read. She read the first 70 pages to Gammy on the phone. I actually dozed off for a few minutes, a result of too many work days that start before 5AM. After they finished their Facetime, C continued to read for about 2 more hours to finish the 200+ pages of the book! That was a major feat for a struggling reader.
When she finished, she asked me what she would get for reading such a big book. Flashbacks all the research saying how bad it was to give rewards for something you want your kids to value for its own merit. I explained that reading was its own reward. I told her that as a reward, she could get another book to read. And I would post on her 'Baby Book.' So here she is. My very capable reader. And now she's working on her own spin-off, "Diary of a Savage Mom." I wonder who inspired that?
