- The main reason I'm posting is that Boop memorized her 1st book earlier this month, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. She almost knows the entire book verbatim and only needs a few prompts here and there.
- Not sure what happened, but she woke up one morning with skin like the texture of misshapen coblestones. Maybe from playing in the yard and helping clean outside. Boop learned the word sphigmomanometer at the doctor's office, and we practiced it for when the doctor came. She actually did get most of the word out for the new doctor, in spite of her being a bit shy.
- She is starting to get better about cleaning her messes by herself--when she wants to, but she's also excelling at making some very frustrating messes. Last night, she just decided to pour the rest of her Benadryl in the middle of the kitchen floor.
- Bedtime is a chore. Note bullet point about Benadryl. Starting about 8:30pm, she runs around like a wild banshee, jumping on beds, and throwing objects. I got her a daybed and painted it purple like she wanted. Unfortunately, the Mickey Mouse sparkle paint did not work out too well. In spite of my efforts to get her bed just right, Boop is not very good about using it, always upset that it is "too hot!" It's the same as mine. Maybe the situation will difuse as cooler weather rolls around, at which time it will undoubtedly be "too cold!" It will also be dark earlier, which may help me usher her to bed at an earlier time.
- Boop has been writing her name for a little while, but I suspect it's more legible for people with dyslexia when she gets going a little too fast. Sometimes it's rightside up, sometimes upside down, sometimes backwards, but mostly a combination of the 3. But at 3.5, I feel pretty good about her progress.
- She's a big girl, and it's a bit hard for her to get all those muscles to cooperate. If coordination is a problem for her, she came by it honest; plus the fact that her development hasn't quite caught up to the big body it must command. She's getting there. We're working on coloring inside the lines. Sorry John Mayer (no, not really. A millenial, she is not).
- Winnie is still hanging tough. She's coughing more due to the heart murmur, but she can bound up and down the stairs without missing a beat. When we took her to the pet store for her birthday in July to pick out a present, the shelter volunteers were shocked to learn that our puppy was really 13 years old!
- As for me, I'm still trying to get my stuff together. Life happens. I'm coming down after several weeks of steroids from poison ivy. School starting is always measured chaos. Trying to find time to do fun things for Boop, as she's only this age once. Trying to make sure she is doing enrichment activities, too. For example, last Saturday, we ran from Boop's music class to a birthday party for Boop's friend to opening ceremonies for my school. I think these things will only get worse.
- The good news is that the finanical planner felt pretty comfortable with me retiring in 8 years--not that I ever really would quit working entirely, especially since retiring at that age would mean living at a bare minimum.
- And so that's Boop waking up. I call her Broadway Baby. She sings every move that she's making. Apparently, she is making her grand entrance down the stairs.
This is a little blog to keep my friends and family in the know about my growing bump and the ins and outs of my pregnancy--and being a new Mom.

A few random updates:

Logodaedalist. 6-16-15
More of Boop's language:
- Hanitizer--Hand sanitizer (I like this one a lot.)
- Usage--I need some hanitizer.
- Scare me up--When someone comes into your room, wakes you, and it scares you. This is a lesser known definition than the regular use of the phrase "scare me up", which means "gather," as in "scare me up a mess of beans."
- Usage--You scare me up this morning.

Boop’s Christmas List. 11-15-14
Conversation last night:
Me: What do you want for Christmas?
Boop: Presents!
Me: What kind of presents?
Boop: Pink! Pink Presents! <pause> And Purple
Presents!
Me: What kind of presents? What do you want inside the
present?
Boop: Uhhhh… Bendy! I want bendy!
Me: What’s bendy?
Boop: Bendy! <in other words, just messing with you,
Mommy.>
Me: A dolly? A pink and purple dolly?
Boop: Yeah, a pink dolly and a purple dolly.
Me: Have you thought any more about what you want for
Christmas?
Boop: Uh, Things! I want Things!
Me: Bendies?
Boop: Yeah, bendies.
Me: What are bendies?
Boop: <laughing> I want a happy face.
<In other words, surprise me, but it better be good.>

Boop’s Lexicon: A Brief Compendium. 11-4-14
1. “It’s birthday cake.” = It’s very fancy.
2. “I wanna watch Ping Pong.” = I want to watch Peppa Pig.
That was a really hard one to figure out!
3. “I want Scoopy Bunny.” = I want you to sing ‘Little Bunny
Foo Foo.’ Another hard one to figure out.
4. “I wanna see the Lil’Boy; I don’t wanna see the Lil’Boy.”
= I’m afraid of the inflatable football player, but he’s standing in the way of
something I want to do—like maybe go to the park.
5. “You a slunky!” = Something really bad. Something you don’t
want to be called. I got this in response to me asking her if she was being
lazy. We think it means something like slob and flunky, but she doesn’t know
what a flunky is. I like this term a lot and can think of a lot of people who
are slunkies.
6. “I want Skype.” = I want to watch YouTube kiddie videos
on the computer we use to call Gammy on Skype.
Be funny!
Hence, “I wanna watch 4
Little Monkeys on Skype.” = I want to watch the 5 Little Monkeys video on
YouTube on the computer we use to call Gammy on Skype.
7. “Be funny.” = Smile
8. “You be funny!” = This can go either way, depending on
her mood. It can either mean, ‘That’s great; you’re laughing.’ Or usually it
means, ‘Hey, stop laughing at me!’ and is usually followed by her giving me
down the road, “You don’t do dat! You <something garbled and
incomprehensible—maybe you a slunky>!”
9. “That’s my favorite.” = I mildly like this, and I want to
do this/have this. It reeks of sarcasm, but I don’t know when the understanding of sarcasm develops in
a child. I’m guess not before age 3.
10. “I wanna watch ganga/slunkalunk.” = I want to watch what
is on Nick Jr., instead of Hogan’s Heroes.

Taking Stock at 2.5 Years. 7-22-14
Gammy came in for the weekend, and we took Boop out to eat for her half birthday. Then, we went to Wally World to get her a couple of Dora's. I was hoping to entice her to bathe by getting another doll for the tub. She still despises getting her hair washed, as she doesn't like water in her eyes.
Later, Mom was talking to me in the car, "You were smart, but I think Boop's even smarter than you were." I laughed and said, "I know." Just trying to stay a step ahead.
I thought I would make a note of some of our interesting conversations of late.
Boop still needs some work on perfecting the selfie. Wait, did I actually use the word selfie? <cringe>
Later, Mom was talking to me in the car, "You were smart, but I think Boop's even smarter than you were." I laughed and said, "I know." Just trying to stay a step ahead.
I thought I would make a note of some of our interesting conversations of late.
- When transitioning to her new class, Boop’s teacher told me that Boop was having trouble drawing things that represented other things. That explains why, every time she draws something, she points to it and asks me, “What Boop make?” That must be what they are always asking her. I laughed and said, “Well, I’ve seen her doing it.” The previous weekend, Boop told me to look on the wall where she had scribbled in crayon <cringe>. She proudly informed me. “It’s sailboat, Momma! It’s sailboat!” A deep breath and an explanation that we had to draw on paper and not on the walls. Fortunately, a magic eraser took care of her artwork.
- Our conversation when looking at her Dora and the Unicorn book--
M: “Honey,
that’s a unicorn.”
B: “It’s cupcake
on its head.”
M: “No,
Honey, it’s a horn.”
B: “It’s
cupcake.”
I was not going
to argue with her so I just said nothing. She then went on:
B: “That’s
Misslissa.” (Her name for one of her teachers and our friend. “Boop’s got 2
Misslissas!”)
M: “Oh, it
is. Okay.”
- Her favorite word now is Ganga or less commonly ga-ga. It’s a word she’s created to mean something she doesn’t know the word for/can’t remember the word, or more commonly when she’s telling a joke. It really cracks her up. I got her a few days ago. She didn’t want to get dressed for daycare. When I asked her what she wanted to wear, she told me “Ganga,” trying to be funny and put me off. I pulled out a random dress from the drawer and said, “Here it is, your Ganga; let’s put it on.” She was a little surprised but then seemed pretty happy with it. She later pointed to the flowers and butterfly on her dress and informed me that they were Ganga.
- One of the teachers thought it was funny that Boop always refers to herself in the 3rd person. I thought about it, and I think I know why. I always refer to myself in the 3rd person, “Mommy needs ….” I think she knows my name by now. It’s going to be hard to switch to 1st person around her after making a habit of 3rd person for so long.

Turkey, Stump, and Woodland Creatures. 1-1-14
I wonder what the new year holds. I’m piddling, going
through some videos. Boop has her DVD of the Wiggles playing and is simultaneously
playing her Wiggles guitar (Lights of New York + Fruit Salad (Wiggles) + Over
in the Meadow (Wiggles) = nutty Kim). Boop loves Fruit Salad, but Paul looks unhealthy
in the video--makes me a little sad every time I watch. Hm. Divebomber seems so
pleasantly familiar. Such a sweetie. ENTJ? Maybe my cheap butt will break down
and buy the album. But this little squirrel is storing away acorns for winter. I
haven’t bought any albums in a long while.
Strapped to me is about the only way she'll be still.
I was just reading a bit about wild goose chases. I’ve been
on a few. Interesting note about wild goose chases: it’s not really about
hunting, like I thought. It’s a form of a 16th century horse race
where all the other horses chase after a crazy lead horse. That’s about as far
as I got in the explanation. It helps if you know which wild goose you’re
supposed to be chasing, and I haven’t been really sure. I wonder if there is
ever a winner in such a race or how you can tell. Do the other horses ever
catch up to the lead horse? I have no idea how that’s done. I bet it’s pretty
amusing to watch, but it’s not fun to be one of the horses on the chase. Boop
is a bit of a crazy horse, herself, and if I don’t run interference, she might
tear the house down.

Taking Stock at Month 23. 12-18-13
Here’s
what’s happening at 23 months:
- One more month and Boop will be 2 years old. It’s pretty amazing to think of. She’s a head full of curls with a definite mind of her own. We made a quick run to the grocery last night to pick up a few things. Of course, she was not content to sit in the cart, even the one made for little kids. She maneuvered her way out, and totally had the shopping thing down. Unfortunately, she didn’t always want to look at the things that I did. We went down the baking isle to get stuff for cookies. I turned around, and she had 3 different kinds of candy sprinkles and was putting them in the cart. Did she know they were for cookies? Probably just a fluke. I reassured her that we already had some at home. I had showed them to her a few days ago.
- Boop sings her ABC’s a lot. She fumbles a bit after G, but if you sing along, she picks back up at O and can just about knock out the rest. She has started to say her numbers and can count to ten, sometimes even “fweven” or “twove”, but she sometimes skips a number in the middle. You know, most kids do these things, but when you’re with one a lot and are just going along, it almost blind-sides you to see that intellectual leap. We’re still a ways from colors. She knows the words and repeats them, but she doesn’t have the concept.
- It cracks me up (and wow a few minutes reprieve!) to see her sit and read. She’ll look at one of her books, I’ll hear some mumbling, and then all of the sudden, a word I can understand. She sits in her little bath and talks to her rubber duckies, ‘no, no duckie,’ she admonishes them. It won’t be long before she’s more independent. A mixed blessing, I guess.
- She’s getting too heavy for me to carry everywhere, and she screams the minute I try to put her down. Her attachment anxiety is so strange, and it was hard for me to understand. She does fine when I get her to daycare, but boy, she does NOT want to get dressed in the morning. Then, she is not anxious to get home, does not want to get in the car seat for the 1.5 minute ride home. Once at home, she will not let me out of her site. The timing is so strange, but I think it is just separation anxiety.
- Winnie did NOT have a UTI, yes, she did NOT have a UTI at our last vet visit. Hurray! Unfortunately, she is going blind—probably already there, poor thing. She’s not a young pup; although she acts like it. Fortunately the constant picking (scratching, biting, licking) is most likely the result of allergies. Annoying, but not serious.

Taking Stock at Month 20. 9-17-13
Here's what's happening with Boop at 20 months old:
|
|
Doesn't quite fit into these yet...
- This morning she informed me, "Boop Winnie's Dog." I quickly followed up with "Winnie is Boop's dog;" however there is probably more truth to the former. Winnie still doesn't put up with much from Boop, and Winnie has Boop trained pretty well when it comes to dinner time. Boop is starting to catch on though. When it's something that Boop likes to eat, she tells Winnie in no uncertain terms, "NO," and "Go AWAY!"
- It's a case of 'be careful what you wish for.' Boop isn't saying "NO" to everything these days. It's turned into an emphatic, "NO WAY!!" and is accompanied by a swinging arm to get rid of the offense. Trying to get her dressed in the morning is challenging. She doesn't want to wear clothes. It's pretty inconvenient as the cold weather is moving in. I get the swinging arms a lot. And she's pretty forceful when she throws her little body around.
- When am I going to get time to take Winnie to the vet? She had another accident yesterday after a while of no messes in the house. I'm just starting to get caught up after a week of some flu-like virus, and now I need to get Winnie sorted. I wish I were back to 100% to manage it, but I still have this funky cough that picks up whenever I have a little activity.
- The decks still aren't finished. I was hoping that I could get the back deck finished; so that we could set up Boop's inflatable pool. Now that the main area is finished, the temperature has taken a wee nose-dive, not getting above 70. Friday looked like it might hit 80, but now that has been revised downward.

Taking Stock at Month 19. 8-18-13
Big things have been happening with Boop since my last
update:
Look on the floor! Boop's favorite thing is to find my dental floss and pull*it*all*out.
- Boop is apparently bilingual. We’ve been working with her on her “Pays” (Please) and “Tays” (Thank you). She says it spontaneously and in the right context. So, we’re getting through on that count. Well, she was watching Dora, and she heard the word Gracias, which she says as “Grath.” Well, she knows a greater proportion of Spanish words than most folks!
- I was informed a few weeks ago that Boop has a boyfriend. She’s doing better than me. Another daycare teacher was telling me this as I picked Boop up one afternoon. He said that they were watching Boop and a little boy in his class as they held hands for about 10 minutes. They couldn’t believe it. So, it sounds like I’m already in trouble! The things she comes up with.
- Winnie has been taking a supplement to prevent UTI’s, with mixed success. I believe she has another one; so I need to make another trip to the vet.
- I started Invisalign. I’m trying to remember if braces hurt this bad. Maybe I’m just becoming a wimp in my old age. I’ve been resisting Ibuprofen. Boop must be teething, too. She is nursing all night long.
- And on the topic of nursing, folks have told me that there is a time as a toddler (usually around 16 months) that they lose interest nursing and that’s a good time to wean. I definitely have not seen this in Boop, and I’m afraid that window has come and gone.

Decision Tree. 8-13-13
Here's a little sketch of how Boop's mind is working these days. Somehow, she determines that it's a living thing, then she decides if it's Mommy or a dog. Everything that isn't a person is a 'go-dy' (doggy), especially cats or mice. She's gotten better about figuring out monkeys and birds. After that, she's a little lost. I should have written 'Money' for Winnie, as she can't quite say it properly just yet.

Taking Stock at Month 16. 6-6-13
Here's what's happening at 16 months old:
- We have settled into a routine, which probably looks more like chaos to outsiders. I was surprised I was able to report weekly updates as long as I did. I was so far behind that I just gave up. Boop will be 17 months old in a couple of weeks. At least I could give an update before the month is over.
- Boop has just learned to say 'jes' and nod her head. It is a huge improvement over the indignant 'no' that I got in response to every question I asked. We have lots of great toddler words now, like 'MINE'. She's speaking in sentences, but I just can't understand her beyond the 1st few words. She probably feels the same about me.
- One thing that she has clearly picked up from me is my 'what/why/how <insert incredulous phrase like what gives?!?, why are you in the dog crate?!?, why did you rip the screen out of the door?!?>' with palms up. She looks at me, turns her little palms up, and says 'wa-wa?!?'.
- We have a few recognizable songs. There's the classic rocking chair song "Rock-a-Baby ah da dip dop", which I have previous featured. There's also Boop's old favorite "Baby, baby, bee" also known as "Baby bumble bee." She sings a lot, but I can't quite figure out the songs.
- It seems that Boop and Winnie have been apparently UTI free, but it seems like I'm 'it' now, after my visit to the Urgent Treatment Center yesterday.
- I finally paid off my student loans this month, and I'm trying to save up money for braces and retirement. I'm a little obsessed with retirement, now. Does that tell you anything about the current status of my job? Well, everyone has their highs and lows in the working world, and this is definitely not a high point.
- My friend, A, was nice enough to go out to dinner with us last night to help me get my mind off of things. A bit of African goat curry never hurts. We were both surprised to see Boop take the spoon and start digging in, especially when 1. she's not crazy about utensils, and 2. she would have none of the matoke when I tried to feed her.

Taking Stock at Week 63/64. 4-6-13
Here’s what’s happening at Boop’s week 63/64:
- We returned from our travels to a storm. Boop is spending full days at her new class now. She really didn’t get enough of a transition. Drop off has been physically draining. Most days she is hysterical when I leave. However, most folks say that she settles down and is fine after I leave. I can’t help feeling like I’m somehow betraying her. If it were a developmental thing as folks say, it’s strange that it only appeared when she went to her new class. I had to cut out the lunchtime nursing session; she’s just too upset when I try to leave again.
- Lots of developmental stuff. After spending so much time with Mom, Boop’s picked up a few things from her. I can’t help but laugh. Boop straightens up after leaning over and says, ‘Oh, GAH!’ Poor Mom is having lots of trouble with her back, especially trying to pick up our little chunk. And I have heard Mom call upon the name of our dear Lord more than once out of pain. Sometimes Boop says words like ‘eat’ and ‘milk’ as clear as a bell. Most times she’s a bit lazy. However she will practice some things; for example, she walks through the house waving and saying ‘bye-bye’.
- Another UTI for Winnie. We had to spend 1.5 hours at the vet, which had me pulling my hair out. We came straight from daycare with no snacks, and Boop was climbing the walls. This time we have to do 28 days worth of antibiotics. So, I’m struggling to get Winnie to take the meds. I’m out of tricks.
- I have hives and a sinus infection. I accidentally got a piece of mango in a fruit salad over a week ago, and I got hives all over me. My tongue swelled a bit at the time, but the hives just wouldn’t go away. And I’ve been fighting this sinus infection for several weeks. So, I finally went to the urgent care and got on steroids and antibiotics.
A bit faint in this shot but much worse in other places.

Go-Go-Go! 11-6-12
I already knew it when I was carrying her. Boop is a busy
girl. But, I never expected her next words after Ma-Ma: “Go, go, go, go!”
With her being around the 90th%ile for height and weight, you might
think it would be something like “Food.”
A rare moment of calm...
When I heard it one weekend, I wasn’t sure I was really
hearing what I thought I was. The next Monday, her teacher filled me in. The
two older kids can walk alright on their own. So when those two are finished
with lunch, the teachers help them down from the high chair and help them to
walk away from the feeding area saying, “Go, go, go…” I don’t think the older
kids say it very much, but for little Boop, it’s like a mantra and a motto.
So, Boop is knocking and banging around quite a lot, and
unfortunately some of that banging involves her head <wince> <heart
stop>. I just imagine her risk of Parkinson’s disease going up exponentially
each time she takes a spill. Not sure if that’s a real risk factor (falls as an
infant), but it can’t be good. I’m thankful that each time she falls, she
whimpers and wants Mommy, but then she goes right back at it.

Taking Stock at 17 Weeks Old. 5-16-12
Here’s what’s going on at 17 weeks old (and a few things I
may not have mentioned from before):
- Boop has now figured how to get the frog on her seat to play music by pulling it. She even turns in her swing so that she can reach the dangling elephant.
- When Winnie was a puppy, she hid her treats in my shoe. A few weeks ago, I looked in Boops car seat, and there was a little piece of dog food from Winnie :)
- I recognize the baby that I carried in my womb. Those arms and legs just go and go and go. Easter, I got some chocolate cookies from the Easter bunny, and I ate more than I should have. All night long, I felt those little bouncing legs and flailing arms, accompanied by, “Meh-meh, Meh-meh.” She was loving the chocolate milk—wanted me to stay awake and nurse her, and she was WIRED.
- Tummy time is increasing. She likes her little car mat, and she can tolerate being on her a tummy a little more every day.
- Countdown until Mom arrives: less than 1 day. I’ve been dreaming of many things: taking out the trash, shaving my other leg, and having a meal that doesn’t come from a box or plastic container. Practically nirvana, right?

Taking Stock at 9 Weeks Old. 3-21-12
Here’s what’s happening at 9 Weeks Old:
Sleeping Cutie #4
- Folks have been saying she is going to have blue eyes. I’m starting to see teal edges. Maybe it’s my imagination. Her hair isn’t growing much in the front, but it’s getting a bit longer in the back. She’s been spitting up more and blowing bubbles/drooling. She may be having reflux or tummy troubles. It’s on my list for the next pediatrician visit.
- She’s just about grown out of her 0-3 month clothes; the footed onesies are a bit short. Thankfully, she’s managed to wear all of her colder weather clothes at least once. It’s warm enough now that she will get to wear some of the 0-3 month summer clothes.
- Lately, I’ve been catching myself thinking, ‘Is she really doing x<insert activity here>?’ It turns out that ‘Uh-Nay’ usually means wet diaper, but there’s a related word I’m hearing, ‘Meh.’ One time, she was laying on the bed crying, she looked up me and said, “MeMeh.” I swept her up in my arms. From what I can tell, it either means milk or Mommy or, most likely, both. She’s starting to say, ‘Owah’ more, for ‘I’m sleepy.’ Then, once I thought I saw her reaching out with very jerky movements. Later, she was in her swing, and she reached for the tie on my robe. I’m seeing her reach for things more and more now.
- I don’t really feel like she’s my baby, yet. I mean, there is really no question that she’s mine. And she’s the best thing since sliced bread. But it just doesn’t seem like she should be mine, I guess, or that someone will take her away. I can’t say I’ve really had post-partum depression, yet. With the craziness of that week in the hospital, I was feeling quite moody. I got a script for some meds just in case, but I’m not using them.

Taking Stock at 4 Weeks Old. 2-16-12
Here’s what’s happening at 4 weeks old (+1 day):
- Is Boop a month old? Well, I guess that won’t be until a few more days. That’s going to make the weekly reports a little tricky. They won’t coincide with her age in months, which seems to be the way time is measured for babies—different than fetuses (feti??) and embryos. So, I’m not sure if I’ll change the way I do these updates.
- The swelling on Boop’s noggin is pretty much gone. However, her skull plates are overlapping, which results in some pretty large, bony knots. They don’t seem to bother her though. She’s starting to spread out her fingers a bit, and her thumbs are coming out from under those fingers. Her eyes are still blue. Boop is becoming a bit more—weighty, which is a good thing. She’s also filling out her 3 month clothes pretty well in length, when she stretches her legs out. Like my family used to say of me, “She’s growing like a weed.” J
- We’re still trying to manage this sinus problem that seems to be hanging on. I’ve finished my antibiotics, but they didn’t seem to phase me. I guess I’ll try to follow up next week. Boop doesn’t need to go back for 3 more weeks, but she seems to be doing better than me. I’ve lost a couple of pounds, but it’s much slower going. I wish I had the chance to do some exercise, but in spite of Boop’s strength, she is still quite floppy and needs to be held constantly.
- Boop is less likely to wail when I change her diaper. Note: I said less likely, meaning she still can let out some howls when the mood strikes her. She still wails, period. One of her favorites is, “UH-NAY! UH-NAAAAAAYYYYY!!!” which means, “I’M HUNGRY! FEED ME *NOW*!!!” It’s a slight variation on Dunton’s “Neh”. Mom is also very familiar with “Eh, eh, wah” which means “Burp me, please burp me, and I’m going to cry whether or not you do what I want!”

The Game Plan. 1-1-12
The morning started with a trip to the stores to try to catch new reductions on Christmas stuff. Along with some general odds-and-ends I needed for the house, I had a few things to get for the baby. I needed a couple of bins for diapers: one to leave outside for the diaper service to pick up and drop off, the other one for dirty diapers in the house. They had plastic trash cans that Winnie could tip over. I’ll probably wind up with a stainless steel one. I also needed a baby memories book. I bought one, but I’m not happy with it, as it asks a lot of information about the father. I think I’ll get a scrapbook instead.
Otherwise, I’ve been doing a bit of research on how to introduce a baby to a dog and how to interpret baby sounds. As to Winnie, it sounds like I should just give up! Basically, I should have been doing a million things with Winnie all through the pregnancy. To further complicate matters, most of the websites were inconsistent. And then the introduction will be challenging as Mom is too much of a softy and the weather will probably not cooperate. A couple of things seem consistent and maybe doable though: (1) maintain as much of a routine as possible, (2) never allow baby and dog alone together, (3) get dog used to baby sounds and smells, and (4) have safe zones for dog and baby. I played some YouTube videos of babies crying, which didn’t seem to phase Winnie. Although Winnie doesn’t understand images on TV or the computer, she does respond to sounds that come from them (especially door knocks and dog barks). Introducing smells and limiting contact, as some websites advise, will be more tricky.
Finally, I was trying to look up something I saw on the Oprah show a few years ago. There was an Australian woman who was able to understand a rudimentary baby language that could potentially prevent babies’ cries. It’s called the Dunstan method. There were sounds for hungry, sleepy—5 altogether. I tracked down the DVD/book and will hopefully get it before the baby arrives. The reviews were mixed: the information was helpful, but it was a bit thin on content.
